The Northern Lights is a majestic event; the colorful bands of light drawing visitors in from all over the world just to catch a glimpse!
As one of the most popular items on people’s bucket lists, it’s time to start planning a trip to see this wonderful event – but where do you go? Alaska, of course!
However, seeing the Northern Lights takes some serious planning, so heed the following tips when booking your trip to see the auroras:
Pick the best location: Fairbanks
One of the top places to see the Northern Lights in Alaska is in Fairbanks, located inland and underneath the aurora oval, where auroras are frequently spotted.
As one of the few places in Alaska where you can see the Northern Lights, Fairbanks offers a reliable location for increasing your chances of seeing the mystical light show.
Select the right time of year
The darker the state, the easier you can see the Northern Lights, so plan your trip during mid-September to late April when Alaska experiences its most darkness. These months make up Alaska’s Northern Lights season due to the long, dark nights and frequent displays of auroras.
Watch the weather forecast (and the aurora forecast!)
As with most activities, weather conditions also affect your viewing of the Northern Lights.
The best way to see this natural phenomenon is when skies are clear and dark. If you can see the stars, you can likely also see the Northern Lights. Sometimes if the aurora is strong enough, you can still see it when skies are partly cloudy.
Check the weather and aurora forecasts before booking your trip!
There are specific times that are best for seeing the mystical light show in Alaska.
- Generally: 11:30 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.
- During the winter: 11:30 p.m. – 3:30 a.m.
- During the spring or fall: 12:30 a.m. – 4:30 a.m.
Get plenty of rest before the show; you’ll want to stay awake for this!
